Castel Sant'Angelo, beside St. Peter's in Rome, was photographed in 1909, when Rome had been the capital of the Kingdom of Italy for under four decades and was growing quickly. The city's economy rested mainly on government employment, building, and the service trades that came with a large clergy and a steady stream of pilgrims and visitors. The Tiber had flooded badly in 1900 and 1901, so riverbank walls and embankments were still being built along the water below the castle. Relations between the Italian state and the Vatican remained strained under Pope Pius X, a tension that shaped everyday civic life in the Borgo district, where the castle stood. Residents of the city would have known the fortress as a landmark of papal and military history, though its use had shifted toward state administration and storage.
