The portrait is titled simply "Batchese," which appears to be the sitter's name, though the record gives no tribal affiliation or further biographical detail. It was made by J.W. Britain, a photographer working in Kalispell, Montana, a town in the state's northwest near the Flathead Reservation. Around 1900, studio portraits of American Indians in traditional dress were widely produced and sold, and they often reflect the photographer's staging as much as the sitter's daily life, so the clothing shown is worth viewing with that context in mind.
