This three-quarter length engraving shows Adolphe Thiers turned to the right, a pose that gives the figure a composed, formal bearing. The record dates it to the 1840s, when Thiers was a prominent journalist, historian and politician under King Louis-Philippe. He had already written a multivolume history of the French Revolution and was at work on his history of the Consulate and Empire, both widely read in his day. Portraits like this one circulated to spread the image of a leading public figure of the July Monarchy.
