Raspberries is a color chromolithograph from about 1874, one of the many fruit-crate and produce labels that flooded American markets in the 1870s. Chromolithography, which built up a picture from separate stone or metal plates, one per ink color, let printers turn out bright, glossy images cheaply, and growers pasted these labels onto boxes to catch the eye of buyers. The U.S. Copyright Office number recorded with the print shows that the design was registered for protection, a step many label makers took to guard their artwork against copying. Its record places it in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
