Where many labels on this board show oranges with no named source, this one credits a specific grower, B.B. Barney, and his Sunny-side Grove. The "Washington" in the title refers to the navel orange variety rather than the state. The seedless navel reached Southern California in the 1870s and became the region's signature crop. Labels like this were printed in color and pasted onto wooden shipping crates to tell buyers in distant markets where the fruit came from and what to expect from it.
