The title of this 1936 poster introduces its subject as a storekeeper who sells foods that are good for you and who must keep his shop clean enough to earn customers' trust. Theodore Ward designed it as a silkscreen print, a method the Works Progress Administration's poster program used widely during the Depression to make inexpensive, eye-catching images for public information campaigns. The subject headings place the message among markets, merchants, food, and sanitation in New York State in the 1930s, when local health education often reached grocers and shoppers through posters like this one. A date stamp on the back, April 1937, shows the print was filed within a year of its creation.
