The title, *Coupe de raisins*, is French for a bunch of grapes, so the subject is fruit rendered for its own sake. The print is a mezzotint, a process in which the printmaker roughens an entire copper plate with a rocker tool and then scrapes or burnishes areas smooth, so the forms emerge from a dark ground rather than from drawn lines. The record credits Yozo Hamaguchi as the maker, but the caption card gives no date, so the print's exact period remains uncertain. Mezzotint was valued for its soft, velvety tones, and it is worth looking closely at how the modeling of light and shadow on the grapes differs from line-based printing.
