Its message is stated plainly in the title: eat fruit, and be healthy. Made under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which ran from 1935 to 1943, the poster belongs to a large body of public health and nutrition graphics produced for schools, clinics and state agencies during the Depression. Many of these designs were screen-printed, a method that allowed large runs in bold, flat color that could be read from across a room. Posters like this one aimed to turn nutrition advice into something a passerby could take in at a glance.
