Filed under fruit and vegetable labels, this piece is really a poster announcing an exhibition of New Jersey paintings at the Federal Art Gallery. Its design is what a viewer notices first: the lettering was meant to catch the eye of passersby and draw them in to see the works. Posters like this came out of the Federal Art Project, the Works Progress Administration program that employed artists during the Great Depression from 1935 to 1943. Its galleries and exhibitions brought art to ordinary communities, and this poster is a small record of that effort to put regional painters before local audiences.
