Grow it yourself" and "Plan a farm garden now" are the poster's direct appeals, aimed at New Yorkers who had little farmland but could still plant food. The New York WPA War Services produced this color silkscreen between 1941 and 1943, when the federal government was encouraging households to raise their own vegetables. Victory gardens, planted in backyards, vacant lots and window boxes, grew by the millions during the war and eased pressure on commercial produce and rail shipping. The poster frames gardening as a civic contribution rather than a hobby.
