The title on this 1936 poster promises a "Yankee Doodle cocktail," borrowing the Revolutionary-era tune to pitch a Federal theater Project show in California. The Works Progress Administration's poster division printed it in silkscreen, a method that produced bold, flat color cheaply in large runs. The Federal theater Project, created in 1935 to put unemployed actors, writers and stagehands back to work, staged productions across the country, and its posters often leaned on punchy slogans like the "New! Novel! Different!" line here. Notice how much of the message rests on the words, with the patriotic theme doing the selling.
