Few fruits on a 19th-century collecting card carry as much history as the breadfruit, a starchy tropical fruit native to the Pacific that was carried to the Caribbean in the late 1700s as a food crop. This color lithograph pairs the fruit with Black children, a combination common in the period's trade and advertising cards, which often relied on racial stereotypes. The card is dated only approximately, between 1850 and 1900, and its imagery reflects the attitudes of its era rather than the lives of the people shown.
