In 1907 Milwaukee was one of the largest manufacturing cities in the Midwest, with a population well above 300,000. Its economy rested on breweries, tanneries, and metalworking shops, and its large German-American community gave the city much of its beer-hall and music-society character. The Hippodrome interior shown here belonged to the city's appetite for mass entertainment, when vaudeville, acrobats, and theatrical spectacle drew crowds of working families as well as the prosperous downtown trade. Milwaukeeans of the time knew their city as a place of steady industry, strong civic pride, and lively public amusements, and a large theater hall like this one stood as a sign of that prosperity.
