Lillie Langtry, the English actress known as the Jersey Lily, is shown here in a costume from the play "As in a Looking Glass," a role that let her display the stage presence that made her one of the most talked-about performers of the decade. The cabinet card was made around 1887 by B.J. Falk, a New York photographer who issued many theatrical portraits of this kind. Photographs like this one were sold to fans and helped spread a performer's image far beyond the theater, which was a key part of celebrity culture in the 1880s.
