This hand-colored New Haven engraving from 1787 sets a biblical warning, "A house divided against itself cannot stand," beside a crowded set of political quarrels. The record names Samuel Holden Parsons, a Connecticut officer, and topics including the Society of the Cincinnati, veterans' pensions, and monetary policy. Attribution to the engraver Amos Doolittle rests on a Sotheby's auction catalog. The print appeared the same year as Shays' Rebellion in western Massachusetts and the Philadelphia convention that drafted the Constitution, so it offers a useful view of the anxieties of that moment.
