The stairway belongs to 49 Prince's Gate in London, the home of shipping magnate Frederick Richards Leyland. The house is best remembered for the dining room that James McNeill Whistler decorated for him in the 1870s, later known as the Peacock Room. Leyland was also a major patron of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and collected many paintings, so the house became a meeting place for artists of the period. The record dates this print only to between 1912 and 1920, long after Leyland's death in 1892, so it likely shows the interior as it was in the years just before or after the house changed hands.
