Emanuel Leutze drew himself at work on a large mural, a detail that sets this graphite sketch apart from portraits of the painter posed at rest. Leutze, a German-born artist who spent much of his career in Düsseldorf before settling in the United States, was best known for monumental history paintings that were meant to be seen in public spaces. The drawing dates from roughly 1840 to 1860, a period when American and European painters often produced such large-scale works for halls, churches and civic buildings. Its informal pencil handling offers a glimpse of the studio process behind those finished canvases.
