A study sketch by Thomas Pritchard Rossiter, an artist who took the signing of the Constitution as his subject, lies behind this reproduction. The moment it records is the close of the Philadelphia convention on September 17, 1787, when delegates gathered in the Pennsylvania State House to sign the document that would replace the Articles of Confederation. The caption card gives no date for the reproduction, so it is best read as a later printed version of a 19th-century view of the event. Notice how the arrangement of figures around the table reflects the artist's effort to show who was present.
