Few pictures in this set show the inside of a private home, and this one records the drawing room of the Lawton house in Manila, the residence associated with Gen. Henry Ware Lawton. The photograph dates from between 1899 and 1900, when American forces held Manila after the Spanish-American War and were fighting Filipino forces that had turned against the occupation. Lawton commanded American troops in the Philippines and was killed in December 1899 during an engagement north of the city. The room offers a glimpse of how American officers lived in the city during those years.
