A text-only auction bill from 1879 is unusually personal, since it advertises the household contents of James McNeill Whistler's Chelsea home. The sale followed Whistler's financial collapse after the costs of his 1878 libel suit against John Ruskin, and the ebonized and gilt drawing room suite listed here was among the furnishings put up for auction. With no illustration, the poster relies entirely on its inventory of goods and the artist's name to draw bidders. Printed in London by Thomas Scott, it survives in the Pennell collection, assembled by the couple who later wrote extensively about Whistler's life and work.
