Mis Se Pah appears in Edward S. Curtis's portrait series of Mohave people, made around 1903 along the Colorado River, where the Mohave had lived for generations. The sitter wears jewelry, which the catalog lists as a subject in its own right, and such adornment was an important marker of personal and family identity in many Native communities of the period. Curtis made these portraits as part of his larger effort to document Native American peoples, a project that eventually filled the twenty volumes of *The North American Indian*, published between 1907 and 1930. Viewers today often read such images with attention to both their artistic composition and the circumstances under which they were made.
