Mathilde Mallinger, the Bohemian-born soprano whose dates the record gives as 1847 to 1920, appears here on a carte de visite, the small mounted card portrait that was a popular format in the late 1860s and 1870s. Mallinger performed in major opera houses in Europe during these years, and her image on a card like this would have been bought and collected as a souvenir of a celebrated singer. Cards of this type circulated widely, so a surviving copy offers a useful look at how performers were presented to the public in that era. The print came to the Library of Congress as a 1946 gift, and its reference copy was kept in the biographical file.
