Unlike the low-lying country downriver, Natchez stands on high bluffs, so the spring rise of 1927 threatened the waterfront and its ferry landing more than the town above it. This April 27 view records that riverfront while the river was running high. The 1927 flood was among the largest in the Mississippi's recorded history, driving many hundreds of thousands of people from their homes across the valley and reshaping flood-control policy for decades. The print comes from an album of high-water photographs, so it documents the event as much as the place.
