Carlo Levi sat for Carl Van Vechten on June 4, 1947, a few years after his memoir *Christ Stopped at Eboli* made him known well beyond Italy. Born in Turin in 1902, Levi worked as a painter, physician and writer, and his anti-Fascist activity led to internal exile in the impoverished villages of Lucania in the mid-1930s, an experience that shaped both his book and his canvases. Van Vechten photographed many writers, artists and performers of the period, and this portrait is part of the Library of Congress collection of those sittings.
