The side view of the U.S.S. Vermont, shown here at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, captures a battleship of the Connecticut class, a vessel that carried the Navy's heavy guns into the early twentieth century. The Vermont was commissioned in 1907 and was built at the Brooklyn yard's rival shipyards in the country, giving the picture a useful link to the Navy's expanding fleet of that era. The caption card does not record a date, so the photograph's exact year is unknown. Its long, low profile against the yard shows how central the Navy Yard was to the city's industrial waterfront.
