Along the Harlem River in upper Manhattan, the Speedway was a drive where New Yorkers raced and showed off fast horses and carriages in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American cities and scenic places, made this photograph around 1905, and its caption card lists carriages, bridges, and horse racing as subjects. The catalog data is old and not fully verified, but the scene fits the road's reputation as a place for fashionable driving and informal trotting races. Look for the carriages and the bridge crossings that framed the route.
