Few Edo-period prints show foreigners, which makes this view of the grounds of Kanda Myojin unusual. French sightseers in European dress move through the shrine precincts, and the scene shows how visitors from abroad were beginning to appear at famous Edo sites. The print is signed by Gountei Sadahide, a prolific designer known for Yokohama and Edo scenes, and was engraved by Matsushima Seikichi. It belongs to the series *Tōto meishō kenbutsu ijin*, or *Foreign Sightseers at Famous Spots in Edo*, a set that reflects the interest in foreigners that followed the opening of the treaty ports in 1859.
