Atago hill, the wooded height in Edo's Shiba district crowned by a shrine and a long stone stairway, is the setting here, and the title, "Enjoying the view from Atago hill," invites the viewer to take in the same prospect. The series name, "Foreign Sightseers at Famous Spots in Edo," places the print among the works Utagawa Sadahide and his circle made of Western visitors touring the city after Japan opened to foreign trade in the late 1850s. Such images gave Japanese viewers a close look at foreign dress and manners, and the French figures here are shown in their Western clothing. The record credits Matsushima Seikichi as engraver, a reminder that each color woodcut passed through many skilled hands.
