Bison standing at a river or pond in Yellowstone is the detail that sets this view apart from the park's many scenic pictures. The photograph was copyrighted in 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American scenery to tourists, railroads and hotels. By the early 1900s, Yellowstone was one of the few places where wild bison survived after decades of hunting had reduced the species to a small remnant. The park's protection of these animals was a major part of its reputation, which is why images like this one were popular with visitors.
