A lone rider at the right edge of the frame gives scale to this herd of bison in Yellowstone, and his presence shows how close the photographer was willing to stand. The print is credited to F. Jay Haynes, the Montana photographer whose copyrighted views of the park were sold widely to tourists. By the late 1800s, bison had been hunted to a small remnant across the West, and Yellowstone's animals were among the few still roaming wild. The caption card dates the picture to about 1917, a time when the park's herd was recovering under protection.
