A herd of bison, a tourist coach, and the rock formations known as the White Pyramid and Eagle Rock place both wildlife and travelers in the same view. Yellowstone was set aside as the first national park in 1872, and stagecoaches carried many early visitors through its geysers and scenery. By the 1880s, bison had been hunted down across the American West, so a herd grazing inside the park was a striking sight for those who came to see it. Picture cards of this kind were a popular way to bring such distant landscapes into the home.
