This plate pairs three subjects that together sum up what early visitors came to Yellowstone to see: petrified tree stumps standing in the rock, elk moving through winter snow, and a stagecoach carrying tourists. The park had been set aside as the first national park in 1872, and by the 1880s the Northern Pacific rail line reached Cinnabar at the northern edge, so travelers transferred to horse-drawn coaches for the rest of the trip. Images that mix scenery, wildlife, and transportation like this one were typical of the era's effort to show the park as both wild and accessible.
