Few things in Yellowstone are as dramatic as a lightning strike over Mount Everts, a peak in the park's northern range near Mammoth Hot Springs. The mountain is named for Truman Everts, a member of the 1870 Washburn expedition who was separated from his companions and survived for weeks in the backcountry before being rescued. Storms over the high plateaus and ridges of the park are common in summer, when afternoon thunderheads build quickly and strike exposed peaks. The Library of Congress catalogs this print with a date of about February 6, 1939, which is unusual for a lightning picture, so the record's date is worth checking against other sources.
