A concrete arch spans a rushing stretch of water here, with dark pine forest closing in on both banks, which sets it apart from the park's many bridges shown in open meadow or near geysers. The Yellowstone roads and bridges that carried visitors through the park were built over several decades, first under Army supervision and later by the National Park Service. Reinforced concrete arches became a common choice for such crossings because they resisted the snow, spring runoff and freezing that wore down earlier wooden spans. In black and white, the bridge's pale curve stands out against the rapids and the trees, showing how the structure was meant to blend into the wild setting.
