Mineral terraces cascading toward a steaming pool, with dark pines rising behind, make this one of the more recognizable scenes from the Yellowstone region. Hot springs in the park deposit travertine, a form of calcium carbonate, as their waters cool and spill across the ground, building up the stepped, shelf-like formations seen here over centuries. Such terraces were among the features that drew early photographers and survey parties to the area in the late 1800s, when the park was still new and its geysers and springs were largely unknown to the wider public. The pairing of colorful mineral deposits with the surrounding forest shows the contrast that made Yellowstone a model for later national park landscapes.
