Standing stumps of petrified trees on Specimen Ridge give this view its subject, which the title calls the Fossil Forest. Scientists date the buried forests here to the Eocene, roughly 50 million years ago, when volcanic ash and mudflows entombed successive stands of conifers and the wood slowly turned to stone through mineral replacement. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that sold scenic views of the park to visitors and publishers in the early twentieth century, made the picture, which dates from between 1909 and 1932.
