Here the roadway runs straight across the river, bordered by solid concrete railings that stand out against the canyon's rock and water. Crossings like this one belong to the wave of road building that opened Yellowstone's interior to automobiles in the early twentieth century, when engineers moved away from fragile wooden spans toward more permanent construction. Concrete suited the park's harsh winters and seasonal traffic, and its plain, heavy parapets show how builders tried to make the roadwork fit a rugged landscape.
