The crossing over Jay Creek sits in Yellowstone, and its wooden span was built for the horse-drawn wagons and stagecoaches that carried visitors through the park's early years. The record dates the image between 1895 and 1915, a span that covers the Army's administration of Yellowstone from 1886 to 1918, when soldiers oversaw much of the road and bridge work. Those two decades also saw the shift from horses toward automobiles, a change worth keeping in mind when looking at the road and its sturdy supports. Yellowstone had become the nation's first national park in 1872, and its roads were among the earliest public works there.
