Bare, gray trunks stand in the water's edge beside a still pool, their branches stripped and pale against the flat surroundings. In Yellowstone, dead standing timber near thermal water is often a sign of changing ground conditions, since rising heat, shifting water chemistry, and new geothermal activity can kill trees that once grew there. Carol Highsmith made a large body of photographs of American landmarks and landscapes, and her work was donated to the Library of Congress for public use. Her monochrome treatment strips away color and draws attention to shape, texture, and the quiet stillness of the scene.
