Few subjects in the Yellowstone series are as unexpected as this one: a black bear rising on its hind legs beside a red car. Bears and parked vehicles were a familiar and sometimes dangerous combination in the park for much of the twentieth century, when visitors often stopped to feed or photograph animals from their cars. Carol Highsmith, who has documented American landmarks and everyday scenes for decades, captured the moment with the same straightforward attention she gives to buildings and landscapes. The picture is a reminder of how close people and wildlife once came in the park, and why rules about distance and food storage were later tightened.
