Most of the posters in this group carry a message in a few words, but this one leans on its title, "Be careful near machinery," to do the work of a warning. Printed from woodblocks cut by Hymen Rasdolsky in 1936, it was produced under the Works Progress Administration, whose poster program turned out thousands of designs for public information and cultural events during the Depression. The record also credits the Federal theater Project as sponsor, a reminder that New Deal agencies often shared resources and audiences. The subject reflects a real concern of the period, when factory and farm injuries were common and safety campaigns were a steady presence in American workplaces.
