A silkscreen poster from 1936 announces the opening of Gerhart Hauptmann's *The Weavers* on November 25, staged in Los Angeles under the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that put unemployed theater workers back on stage. Hauptmann's 1892 play dramatizes the 1844 uprising of Silesian linen weavers against starvation wages, a subject that suited a Depression-era audience. The image of the loom and the weavers' labor connects the stage story to the working-class struggle at its center. Hauptmann won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912.
