The record identifies the sitter as James W. Mellen, though that name comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The firm was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio whose early twentieth-century work recorded local residents, public figures, and city life, and its glass negatives were the standard medium of the day. The negative dates from between 1921 and 1922 and came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the photographer's choices.
