An engraving of Kara Mustafa, the Ottoman grand vizier, it was published as an illustration in Joseph von Hormayr's 1823 history of Vienna, *Wien, seine Geschichte und seine Denkwürdigkeiten*. Kara Mustafa led the Ottoman army that besieged Vienna in 1683, and his defeat at the hands of a combined Polish and Habsburg relief force under Jan III Sobieski ended the Ottoman threat to the city. The sultan had him executed later that year. Because the print is an illustration in a historical work rather than a contemporary portrait, it reflects how Vienna's writers remembered the siege more than a likeness made in 1683.
