The sitter is Abraham Cowley, the royalist poet and essayist, and this print reproduces an earlier painting of him. The caption card credits the original to either Sir Peter Lely or Mary Beale, a painter whose portraits were widely known in 17th-century England, so the attribution should be read as unsettled. Cowley (1618–1667) was admired for his odes and essays, and he spent part of the Interregnum in exile in France with the royalist court, which gives a portrait of him a useful link to the culture of the Restoration.
