Here Lincoln appears with the full beard he began growing during the 1860 campaign, a change that is often traced to a letter from an eleven-year-old girl, Grace Bedell, who suggested he would look better with whiskers. The caption card dates the sitting to Chicago on November 25, 1860, about three weeks after his election as president, when he was still a private citizen in Illinois. The print is a bust-length view turned to the left, and it was made later from the original negative. Its catalog numbers in Lloyd Ostendorf's and Frederick Meserve's studies of Lincoln photographs place it among the standard references for his likenesses.
