Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator whose name gave a decade its label, is the figure here, though the record does not say when or where the picture was taken. McCarthy rose to national prominence in 1950 with charges of communist infiltration in the federal government, and his hearings in the early 1950s made him one of the most polarizing politicians in the country. The picture comes from the Granik Collection, a body of portraits and press images held by the Library of Congress, and its undated caption card leaves much of its origin open to question.
