Stalin appears here as a chess player, a metaphor the cartoonist uses to frame Soviet dealings with Iran during the early Cold War. Soviet and British forces had jointly occupied Iran in 1941, and Moscow's reluctance to withdraw its troops from the north after the war fueled tensions that reached the United Nations in 1946. Bill Mauldin, best known for his World War II cartoons about two infantrymen, drew editorial commentary like this for newspapers after the war, and the drawing's mix of crayon, pencil, and white highlights shows the rapid sketch work he used for daily commentary.
