Julia Marlowe, the stage actress, is the subject of this portrait, a photoprint made by Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer who worked in New York and became known for his studio portraits of theater people and public figures in the early twentieth century. Marlowe was a prominent American actress of the period, celebrated for Shakespearean roles and her long career on the stage. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of the sitting is uncertain, but the tracings "Actresses" and "Theater" place the image firmly within the world of the stage portrait.
