Vladimir Horowitz, the Russian-born pianist, appears here in a Bain News Service portrait, one of the many studio and news pictures the agency made of performers in New York. Horowitz arrived in the United States in 1928 and became one of the most celebrated keyboard artists of the twentieth century, admired for his virtuosity and his famously dramatic interpretations. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress preserves this kind of working press photograph, which was made for newspapers and magazines that needed images of musicians and other public figures. The caption card gives no date, but the "Music" tracing and the agency's New York origin place the portrait within the company's work with the city's performing arts.
